KYBELLA® (deoxycholic acid) is the first and only FDA-approved prescription nonsurgical treatment used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), commonly referred to as a “double chin”. It is not known if KYBELLA® is safe and effective in children less than 18 years of age, or for use outside of the submental area.
KYBELLA® is made from deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body responsible for the breakdown of fat cells (lipids). It is a cytolytic drug that destroys fat cell membranes through a process called lysis (the rupture of a cell membrane).
In general, adults over the age of 18 who are bothered by their neck profile and feel like they have excess fat under their chin are eligible. According to a 2015 survey completed by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, nearly 67% of adult consumers said they were bothered by submental fullness. To determine if you are a candidate, a detailed physical examination must first be performed by Dr. El-Salawy during your consultation visit.
KYBELLA® is usually performed as a series of treatments, usually between 2-4, but may be as many as 6. Treatments are scheduled at least 4 weeks apart. Treatment plans vary from person to person, as individuals differ in the amount of their submental fat, as well as in their anatomies.
KYBELLA® works by destroying fat cells so they can no longer store or accumulate fat. Once the desired outcome or profile has been achieved, further treatment is not required.
Younger clients typically don’t have any residual skin laxity, since younger skin tends to have good tone. However, older clients may experience a small residual area of loose skin after KYBELLA® treatment, as skin naturally loses elasticity with age. Dr. El-Salawy can perform Ultherapy® treatment following KYBELLA® treatment, to tighten the skin further. Ultherapy® uses micro-focused ultrasound to lift and tighten loose skin, without any downtime. Ultherapy® is the one and only FDA-approved noninvasive procedure available today.
Alcoholic beverages should not be consumed 48 hours prior to treatment. Aspirin should not be consumed one week prior to treatment. Clearance by your medical provider should be obtained to stop the use of aspirin prior to treatment, or if you’re taking any antiplatelet or anticoagulant medicines (blood thinners).
The treatment area is marked, and then thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. A stencil treatment guide is applied for exact precision. Multiple small injections will then be administered. The exact number of injections will be dependent upon the client’s anatomy and size of the area to be treated. The procedure is performed under sterile conditions. Dr. El-Salawy is one of the very few physicians in Florida to perform the treatment using Accuvein (vessel visualization using a special light), allowing him to avoid injecting into a small vessel or a vein, therefore reducing any chance of potential bleeding or bruising.
Treatment typically takes just 15-20 minutes.
The cost of the procedure is determined at the time of your complimentary consultation with Dr. El-Salawy. The cost of the treatment is directly related to the amount of product to be used. A treatment grid will be applied to the treatment area to determine the amount of KYBELLA® required to achieve the desired results.
Healthcare financing is available through CareCredit for qualified Clients.
There is absolutely no downtime, and most clients return to their regular duties immediately.
Presence of an active skin infection at the treatment site is an absolute contraindication to receiving KYBELLA® treatment.
The most common side effects reported are swelling, pain, bruising, bleeding, numbness, redness, and tenderness to touch. The most significant and discomforting side effect is swelling. However, swelling is a sign that the product is working and actively reducing fat cells. While there is no reliable way to predict the chance of experiencing swelling after a KYBELLA® treatment, generally, younger individuals with firmer skin tone develop less swelling compared to older individuals, who have less skin elasticity. The amount of swelling is usually the greatest after your first treatment, and usually minimal to none occurs at the second or even third treatment.
In clinical studies, 79% of patients treated with KYBELLA® reported satisfaction with the appearance of their face and area beneath their chin. Results and duration may vary, and no guaranty of specific results can be given. Please read the Informed Consent for this procedure for full disclosure.
